Type: Speculative project
Project Team: Neyran Turan, Mete Sonmez
For more than a decade, abundance of retroactive manifestos within has showed us the real evidence of capitalist phantasmagoria. In the face of the polarization in our society, suburbanization of our daily lives and the speed of our technologies, all we are left with is urban enclaves or "capsular civilizations." Be it our shopping malls, gated communities or theme parks, capsular civilizations are "non-places" of seclusion, detachment or security. Yet, they are also downcast utopias of our contemporary society.
While zooming on one of the outcomes of contemporary capsular civilizations in Istanbul, IstanPOOL elaborates on the swimming pools of suburban villas, gated communities or clubs. On the one hand, by detecting current pools in Istanbul, the project acknowledges them as potential urban voids which are empty and useless when not being occupied between the months of October and April due to the climate conditions of the city. On the other, by proposing temporary program into these pools within the designated months, the project disrupts the delicate boundaries of private and public space.
