X-hall project is located on a major urban park in Taksim, Istanbul. Originally occupied by an artillery barracks building in the 19th century, the site was later designed as a large urban park/ public void in the 1940s. Park is designed around large ceremonial hardscaped landscape in the center which is approximately 3 meters / 10 feet lower than the street level/parks around it. Having neither a specific activity nor a purpose, this very large ceremonial landscape has become mainly unoccupied as pedestrians choose to circle around the zone rather than passing through it.
X-Hall project derives from idea to repurpose the unoccupied urban void and its context. The project situates itself as an x-shaped juncture/container/bridge that oscillates between being a network of corridors and adaptable gallery/exhibition space. Building form is basically a manifestation of what would have been the natural paths for the pedestrians crisscrossing the park on a daily basis. Re-activation does not only imply physical movement through the site but also aims to instigate various public events.
