Manual of Instructions speculates on the mundane and banal aspects of large scale construction. Revolving around the absurdities of a controversial infrastructural canal project in Istanbul, it sets a dialogue between the environmental imaginations of the large scale and the quotidian day-to-day workings of architecture and construction. The drawings of the project depict a film set that re-enacts the re-assembly, maintenance, and preservation of three fictional monuments, which are accidentally found during the construction of the canal project. By flipping the foreground and the background both in its representation and content, Manual of Instructions exhausts procedures of architectural work and labor. Through the presentation of drawings and models, the exhibition space itself becomes a construction site and a place to prompt discussions around architecture’s own making, assembly and unmaking both as representation and as performance.
